Hygge Life: What Does it Mean for Me?

As much as I have a hard time in the winter historically, the winters that have been my best have been when I embraced the Hygge Life. What does that mean?

It is a Danish word that means (from the Miriam-Webster Dictionary):

Noun: “a cozy quality that makes a person feel content and comfortable.”

Adjective: “invoking or fostering a sense of coziness, contentment, and well-being.”

From the Visit Denmark website: “In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge.”

From the Denmark.dk website: “A warm atmosphere. Hard to pronounce, hygge (“hooga”) is difficult to explain, too. In brief, hygge is about taking time away from the daily rush to be together with the people you care about – or even by yourself – to relax and enjoy life’s quieter pleasures.”

All About Hygge

Okay. I think you get the picture.

Why is the Hygge life so important to me?

Well. In one word: Peace.

For a few years, I tried to be the public school teacher, kids in public school, sports mom, and I have realized recently that it’s just not ME. In order for me to have true peace, this “hygge” life is for me! I honestly believe it is good for my kids as well. I have seen an enormous change in the boys since we started homeschooling again. So much happier, more at peace, and less anxious.

Hygge for me means: candle and lamp light, cozy clothing (warm leggings, beanies, hoodies, sweaters, etc), soft blankets, quiet time with Jesus every day, journaling, homeschooling (in a slow way), reading, writing, homemade (real) food, homesteading, hot drinks (hot tea and coffee), soft music and worship, warm colors, a relaxed mood, full surrender to Jesus and His plan for my life (and the lives of my family), spirit of gratefulness, nature… I could keep going. But again, I’m sure you get the picture.

I thought I’d share some pics of things in my life that have brought me peace and joy lately! The homemade stuff is “home,” which is why it’s part of my Hygge life. So are homemade and natural products!

We have 15 chickens at the moment. Twelve of them are laying eggs at the moment. We are still waiting for 3 of my Easter Eggers to start laying!

I picked our green tomatoes and put them in a dark box because we have freezing temps coming! This will ripen them!
