Essential Oil Scented Homemade Playdough

Ethan still loves playdough and all things sensory. When I read aloud to them, he needs to be busy with his hands to have any sort of comprehension.

I made a fresh batch of playdough today, and I’m in love.

I did things differently this time than I normally do, and it was easier and less messy.

These are the ingredients for the playdough:

  • 4 cups flour
  • 2/3 cup salt
  • 4 tbsp cream of tartar
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil (canola would work also)
  • 2 cups boiling water

It’s super easy:

  • Start water to boil
  • Mix dry ingredients
  • Pour in boiling water and coconut oil
  • Mix with a spoon
  • Let sit to cool for a bit
  • Knead until it’s smooth
  • Split it into 4 sections and press down

Then add your oils and food coloring!

The turquoise contains gel food coloring and the Zen essential oil made by Revive Essential Oils.

The purple has lavender essential oil from Plant Therapy, gel food coloring, and lavender petals.

The yellow has Plant Therapy Bergamot essential oil and yellow food coloring.

And finally, the green has Revive peppermint essential oil, loose leaf mint tea, and green food coloring.

You will have to knead them quite a bit to get the colors mixed. I found it therapeutic. Maybe adults need to play with playdough sometimes also!

I make some with textures because I thought Ethan might like that. We’ll see how it goes! I’m happy with how it turned out.
